My secondary school (where I did my A levels) was an engineering specialist school so we were fairly exposed to that industry. I also took part in a scheme called the Engineering Education Scheme which was the one of the BEST things I’ve ever done, and I made some really awesome friends through doing it too. We worked with a company called dSTL (they advise the Ministry of Defence in England about science related problems) and we made a Multi Spectral Test Range Finding Beacon – which was basically a lightsaber shaped contraption on top of a tripod that had a self righting mechanism (so it would be able to stay upright if it was pushed over) that could test the range of night vision goggles by sending different wavelengths from the goggles to the detector on the beacon if you pressed a button on the remote control.
I didn’t have applied Natural Sciences but you can do Natural Sciences as a subject at university 🙂 I was considering doing that but then decided to do geology instead!

No, I did not have that course but I wish I had the opportunity to take it. It is always fun when you can apply science and see the direct benefits to society.

Hi iloveant! During my high school I actually studied ancient Greek, Latin, Literature and Philosophy, so definitely no ANT for me 🙂
At the university, in Physics, we did not have many “applied” subjects, we are light-years far from the engineers!!, however during my master I followed a course in Nuclear risk and radio protection, and I really enjoyed to get to know all the different protection procedure you have to take and how to measure the risk in a specific location.
Moreover, during our Seismology class, we also had some lectures on managing seismic risk, and in anti-seismic construction, that sounds pretty applied to me: this is actually a crucial research field, you can actually save people’s life building houses in the appropriate way!
Good luck with ANT, then, I think there will be more and more opportunity in this field in the future.

I had natural sciences as part of my general science subject at school and then I up took applied science as a Summer course. To be honest, I loved them too! 🙂
