Question: How many types of rocks are there?

  1. Hi paulpadu123:
There are many types of rocks but geoscientists like to classify them into three groups: sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks, and metamorphic rocks. Sedimentary rocks form from the deposition and solidification of loose sediment (for example beachrock or sandstone). Igneous rocks form from magma (melted rock) that cools and solidifies into a new rock (for example basalt forming from lava coming out of a volcano). Metamorphic rocks form from rocks that are exposed to high temperatures, pressures, and hot fluids. Thes rocks will change their minerals due to the different conditions usually at depth (for example marble is a rock that previously was a limestone).
