Question: When was the first earthquake ?

Keywords:

  1. There is not really anyway we can know when the first earthquake happened. I would guess that it happened sometime near the initiation of Earth’s plate tectonics. However, people have felt earthquakes for a long time since people began to record history. For example, the first recorded earth in China 1177 B.C.

  2. Earthquakes are as old as the Earth (4.6 billion years old). As the Earth began to cool, the changes in temperature could have fractured rocks. You also have earthquakes produced from movement of magma under volcanoes and with volcanic eruptions. And there was a lot of volcanic activity in the early Earth to produce earthquakes.

  3. I guess this question is equivalent to: How old is the Earth? since earthquakes continuously shake our planet, from the beginning of its existence to the end..so Daniel perfectly answered that!

  4. It should be about the same as the age of the Earth, given that earthquakes are basically the movement of plates on the Earth’s surface, or due to magma movement beneath volcanoes. Unfortunately, we do not know for certain, as records available for earthquakes do not date back that far. Nonetheless, it would make as a very interesting discovery if we could actually find out when the very first earthquake occurred.

  5. As Jesse, Daniel, Anna and Denise have already mentioned, the first earthquake would have taken place when the earth was ‘born’, so 4.6 billion years ago. And they happen all the time due to magma movement under volcanoes and at plate boundaries too where the plates are actively moving together or apart or past each other.

The USGS earthquake website http://earthquake.usgs.gov/ has a real-time earthquake map which is great!
