Question: What is the longest time an earthquake can take?

Keywords: ,

  1. It seems that the 2004 Sumatra earthquake of magnitude 9.2 had the longest shaking ever recorded for an earthquake. Studies suggest that the earthquake lasted about 10 minutes. Now, this does not mean that people felt it for 10 minutes as the people will not feel the gentler vibrations. However, seismometers (sensitive instruments for recording waves) recorded for the full 10 minutes. Now most earthquakes last under a second and are not felt by people. Large earthquakes generally can shake for 2 minutes. So, the Sumatran earthquake of 2004 was really one of the biggest ever recorded.

  3. Most earthquakes will shake for about a second. As rightly mentioned by Daniel, the longest recorded earthquake was the 2004 Sumatra earthquake, which shook for about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, there is no fixed time set for how long an earthquake can shake for.
