Question: What do you think is worse: flood or drought ?

Keywords: ,

  1. Hi daga04, I think that both floods and droughts can be equally devastating. Droughts can destroy a society’s food supplies and it can also lead to devastating forest fires which destroy thousands of acres land each year. On the other hand floods can be equally as disastrous leaving thousands of people homeless without food. Floods can also lead to landslides which can obliterate pretty much anything in their path.

  2. Hi!
I would agree with Jesse – both are equally devastating and would have different effects on communities living at risk from them.
Scientists like to study the Asian Monsoon and its weather patterns because of the fact that changes in its behaviour could cause either of these disasters to occur.

  3. I don’t think that one is worse than the other. Both can be bad because they are extreme weather events. However, both are normal in the sense that we expect them to occur every year.

  4. I agree with the others: it is hard to tell! They can both have a big and bad impact on the people living in the affected area, and on the animals and on the land itself. Extremes events like floods and droughts, if occurring more frequently and/or in places where they were not occurring before, are a signal of a balance that is broken, and we, as people, should start thinking if we used the land in a bad way (building where we should not, using too much water, poisoning the waters, etc) and consequently change our behaviour.

  5. Hi Daga04, I completely agree with the other scientists. Unfortunately, they can both gave devastating effects. The sad truth is also that they are pretty common occurrences in a number of countries. Unfortunately, although we do not have alot of rain in Malta, we suffer a number of flooding events due to the poor road infrastructure. Have you ever experienced any of the two?
