It depends on the type of volcano and the amount of magma underneath the volcano. The longest chain of volcanoes occur in mid-oceanic rifts and could be erupting everyday (no one notices as they erupt many kilometers under water). Other volcanoes that have runny lava like Mauna Loa in Hawaii and Stromboli volcano in Italy erupt almost everyday. Stromboli has been erupting almost continuously since 2,000 years ago.
Other volcanoes that have viscous lava that flows very slowly take more time between eruptions and when they erupt it could be an intense explosive eruption. For example, Krakatoa in Indonesia had one of the largest volcanic eruptions which spewed ashes that circled the globe. Fortunately, eruptions on those types of volcanoes occur every several thousands to hundreds of thousands of years.
Volcanoes which have frequent eruptions (like Mauna Loa and Stromboli that Daniel mentioned) have effusive eruptions. These are largely made from an igneous rock called basalt.
Volcanoes which have infrequent but larger eruptions (like the ones Krakatoa has that Daniel mentioned) have lava that has a high silica content (silica is the same material that sand is made from, silicon dioxide).

I agree with the other 3 scientists. It depends on the location and the type of volcano. Unfortunately there is no rule which fits for all in this case. To learn more about volcanoes, I would suggest you had a look at the documentary ‘Volcanoes 101’ by national geographic. It will provide you with a lot of useful information about volcanoes.
